I have a similar story about buying an Apple computer in 2003... (would be worth $740k). Hindsight is a bitch.

I bought $800 worth of Tesla stock the week they went public and several weeks ago, it was worth a little over $10k. I then sold about $2,000 worth to buy that beater Vic.

In a stock game last semester, I was furious when my shares plummeted $40 because of Cybertruck. They went down to $330.

Wish I’d bought more, but at the time, to do so would have constituted a gamble in my mind, so I bought what I felt comfortable with. And the bit I sold, I did so at a peak.

There is no logical reason for the spike we saw 2019 . If I had the cash, I’d short and wait for correction. It has to be coming in 2020.

Nope. I have a day off on Monday and I’m planning to finish up some automotive odds and ends. I need a headlight and marker and rear view mirror on the Vic to make it basic safety. Also, a couple of new tires to mount from the swap meet. And the Safari needs the new trans tail shaft mount installed and new sway bar bushings.

Margin calls can be a bitch when you short a stock like this though. Not for the faint of heart, or the shallow pocketed.
But yeah it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

My biggest win was with AMRN. I sold after I went over 700% in a matter of days/hours.
The tendency is to wish I bought more. Instead I’ll be happy that it happened to me as it probably won’t ever again.

A study about the benefits of fish oil (which AMRN produces) was approved by the FDA. Normally not a stock I would buy, but a colleague told me about it and said it was cheap but might skyrocket pending the results of said report.
So I bought a bunch, the following week or two later it peaked and I cashed out. Bought my pal at work a case of his favorite wine!

Well, if you short at 2 00, and it goes to 900, they’ll be looking for 700 x the number of shares you sold.. Assets and any credit can reduce that number, but still.

It might not be a bad idea to sell today, buy back in next week after the near- inevitable correction.

Not margin call, but a naked call has unlimited downside. Bet $600, lose $600k.

That correction has been near inevitable for what, eight years now? I’m not disagreeing with you, just feeling an inclination to hang on for the ride.
Ironic though, isn’t it, that I used Tesla stock earnings to buy an ugly-assed Crown Victoria?

It’s a combination of a massive short squeeze, and FOMO on the part of investors. I’ll likely sell off soon. It can’t keep this pace.

Every time I see a big stock like this I always go “oh that would’ve been nice to get in on, but it’s probably too late now.” And yet... it keeps just going up. But I don’t feel like it’s a good idea to give up on steady long term planning in favor of wild rides. I’ll just have to wait until the “for the lolz” investment budget is better I guess.

Sell off another quarter of what you have. Then you’ll feel smart for taking some profits if it corrects, and smart for holding on to some if it keeps going (hard to believe that’s possible).

Yes, a long time ago, with my own company stock.
Was fortunate to sell some near $100 (bought my M3
). It’s now less than $30 (and I don’t work there anymore).
My wife has over
six figures
in lost value in her company stock... We should’ve sold many times in the past, but she works close enough to inside info, so
she’s red-lighted a ton...

Red-lighted meaning can’t sell or the SEC would get upset?
C heck this out:
I bought $800 worth of TSLA the week they went public. Several weeks ago, I checked the valuation and it was sitting at $10k. I sold $2k and bought the crappy Vic and still have a few hundo of that remaining. Old news, and the portfolio was worth $8k-ish.
Well, today, based upon what you were suggesting I consider, I looked and the reminder of the holding was worth $17,000 and I’m like DANG! So I sold $7,000 worth and I own fewer shares and I still have as much money in there as I had before I bought Crappy Vic. Crazy. But it will likely adjust, and whatever. My $800 investment has netted me $9,000 in cash, SO FAR.
Dang.
